Physics courses at JGU taught in English include

  • any course that belongs to the Master of Science in Physics degree program as this program is taught entirely in English
  • any course that can be taken as part of either the bachelor’s or the master’s degree program
  • a number of elective courses.

As an exchange student, you can also register (and receive ECTS points) for general courses or German language courses at various levels.

This means that you will likely be able to come to JGU Mainz for a semester (half a year) or even for a full year during the last year of your bachelor’s studies even if you do not have proof of prior knowledge of German. Below is a list of courses that are regularly taught in English.

Ask the Erasmus contact at your home institution for approval for the courses you intend to take, and then confirm with the Erasmus contact at JGU’s Physics Department to make sure there are no time conflicts for the courses during the semester you wish to spend at JGU Mainz.

Lecture periods in Germany typically

  • begin in mid-October and last until mid-February („winter semester“) or
  • begin in mid-April and last until mid-July („summer semester“).

Typically, an agreement can be found if for exchange students this leads to some overlap between lecture periods at the home institution and JGU Mainz.

Exams take place after the end of the lecture period. The way exams are scheduled allows for some flexibility:

  • written exams: for each course with a written exam in the Bachelor of Physics program, students can choose between two dates (one within a few weeks after the end of the lecture period, and the other a few weeks before the beginning of the next lecture period)
  • oral exams: dates for oral exams are agreed on individually with the lecturer
  • lab courses: there are no final exams for lab courses; lab reports are graded instead, and the overall course grade is calculated from these.

Get in touch with the Erasmus contact at JGU’s Physics Department to talk about specific needs you may have concerning your exams.

The following is a list of courses taught in English that may be suitable for and interesting to you if you are a bachelor’s degree student in physics coming to JGU Mainz as an international exchange student. If you do not speak German, you can choose from among these courses. With sufficient knowledge of German, all courses taught in German are also open to you. There is no official German language requirement for exchange students, but you should be able to follow the lectures and participate in study groups in German if you register for courses taught in German.
