The Excellence Track is a program that complements the Master’s program in Physics at JGU for students interested in research. The program is aimed at high-achieving, research-oriented young students who wish to pursue a doctorate after completing their Master’s degree. It enables them to further develop their scientific knowledge and advanced and transferable skills in a structured program. Students who successfully complete the Excellence Track program with their master’s degree are considered excellent candidates for doctoral studies in one of our research groups.
In order to complete the Excellence Track program, students must acquire a minimum of 23 credit points in addition to the regular two-year master’s degree program. These credit points can be earned in two categories:
- Scientific competence
- Complementary and transferable skills
All courses must be successfully completed before submission of the master’s thesis. Graduates of the Excellence Track program will receive a certificate attesting the additional academic achievements and qualifications.
Applications for the Excellence Track program are to be submitted along with the application for the regular master’s degree program in physics, unless the applicant is already enrolled at JGU. If the applicant is already enrolled at JGU, they must enroll in the Excellence Track program before the start of the second semester of the master’s degree program.
Admission to the Excellence Track program requires a completed bachelor’s degree in physics with a very good academic track record that has lasted no longer than one semester over the standard period of study.
Applicants should be in the top 15% of graduates of the bachelor’s program in physics at their previous university. Admission can also be achieved by earning excellent grades in the first master’s semester at JGU.
A selection committee decides on the admission to the Excellence Track program after reviewing the applications and interviewing suitable candidates.
