We are excited to announce the new Double Degree Program in Physics offered by Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) in Mainz, Germany, and the Universitat de València (UV) in València, Spain.

Students enrolled in this program will have the opportunity to study at both universities, benefiting from the expanded range of teaching and research. They will obtain a “Bachelor of Science in Physics” degree (JGU) after the third year and a “Degree in Physics” (UV) after the fourth year. Upon completing their final thesis in the fifth year, students will be awarded both the “Master of Science in Physics” degree from JGU and the “Master’s Degree in Advanced Physics” from UV.

Along the way, students in the double degree program will considerably improve their language, inter-cultural, and networking skills, which can significantly boost their future career in science or industry.

Students wishing to enroll in the program at JGU will start their studies in Mainz and study in Germany for two years, then switch to the Universitat de València for two years. Alternatively, students can enroll in the program at UV, study in Spain for two years and then move to JGU for the next two years. They can choose to do their master’s thesis either at JGU or at UV. This gives our double degree students a wide range of options. For more details, please see the following study course plans. Students can…

JGU is an international university in Germany offering a top-level undergraduate and graduate education in physics. JGU’s teaching philosophy emphasizes early academic independence on all degree levels. Small group sizes and an excellent student-teacher ratio in the physics programs ensure individual mentoring and facilitate the learning progress. Students thus acquire versatile analytical skills which help them make a good impression on the job market and are a great foundation for their career.

On campus, JGU provides a unique infrastructure for physics research, including the particle accelerator MAMI and the neutron research reactor TRIGA. JGU’s particular research strengths in physics include nuclear and particle physics, condensed matter physics, spintronics, dark matter searches, astroparticle physics, and quantum information. At Mainz University, students have the opportunity to join research groups and get hands-on experience in the research field early on during their studies.

The Faculty of Physics at the University of Valencia was established in 1977 and is one of Spain’s leading centers for physics education and research. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Physics, as well as in Optics and Optometry. With a strong emphasis on both theory and application, the faculty plays a crucial role in advancing scientific knowledge and training experts for academia, industry, and research.

Several research institutes are located in UV’s Science Park. The Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), a joint center with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), specializes in particle, astroparticle, and nuclear physics, collaborating with CERN and other international institutions. The Institute of Materials Science (ICMUV) focuses on nanotechnology, photonics, and quantum materials, while the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol) develops functional molecules for applications in electronics and energy storage. The Astronomical Observatory of the Universitat de València (OAUV) contributes to astrophysics research and public outreach. These institutions create a dynamic environment that strengthens the faculty’s position as a key player in international scientific innovation.

Capacity is limited. You must be enrolled in your second year of the bachelor’s degree program in physics at JGU or, respectively, in the second year of the physics degree program at UV. Language skills are required in German, Spanish (or Catalan), and English at a B1 level or higher on the CEFR scale.
