Here you can find further information on the German-taught Bachelor's degree course in Meteorology (Bachelor of Science). Apply until September 1st for a start in the winter semester!

In the first two semesters, you will deal with mathematics and physics, as the study of meteorology is based on these. You will also acquire basic knowledge of climatology and meteorology.

From the third semester onwards, practical content is added: you complete physical and meteorological lab courses in which you learn how to work with experiments in the laboratory and with measuring equipment. There are also interdisciplinary elective courses.

From the fourth semester onwards, you have the opportunity to choose lectures and seminars according to your personal focus. This allows you to specialize and open up exciting fields of research. In addition, a four-week internship will give you the opportunity to apply the skills you have acquired in a professional environment.

In your Bachelor's thesis, you can then take up your own research-related topic and gain practical experience in scientific work.

You can start your studies in the winter or summer semester, as most courses are offered in every semester. You can therefore start in April or October. Three weeks before the start of lectures, all first-year students are offered a bridge course in mathematics to brush up on school mathematics and make the transition between school and university easier for you. This is also a good opportunity to familiarize yourself with the university and get to know your fellow students with whom you will later attend the lectures.

You can gain insights into various research groups and actively contribute to scientific findings as early as your Bachelor's degree. Many research groups offer paid positions for student assistants, which not only provide you with financial support, but can also be an important step towards an exciting scientific career. The "Meteorology - Bachelor of Science" course teaches the basics of meteorology and forms the foundation for the advanced "Meteorology - Master of Science" course.

Meteorologists can work in the field of weather forecasting and in the research and development of new weather products and computer models or be responsible for producing forecasts based on model calculations and observations at a radio or television station. Due to their scientific training, meteorologists also find employment in companies in the chemical, aerospace, shipping, automotive and combustion technology and pharmaceutical sectors - wherever skills are needed for the evaluation of satellite data or large databases. Meteorologists are also needed in the energy sector: Especially today, it is important to use renewable energies as efficiently as possible - and this is only possible with a sound knowledge of meteorological relationships. Insurance companies now employ meteorologists who use computer-aided analyses and calculations to assess the risks of extreme weather events such as storms, floods and droughts. However, they are also in demand as generalists with special skills for solving complex problems in other - not directly obvious - areas: the techniques for understanding the development of a share price, for example, are the same as those used for analyzing stock prices. They are also in demand in the financial sector.

You can apply for the winter semester until September 1st and for a start in the summer semester until March 1st. Please note: in order to apply with international documents you need to get them recognized before you apply for a degree program (more information can be found here). To be able to study at JGU, you need a suitable higher education entrance qualification (HZB). An example of this is a German Abitur, but there are also other types of HZB.
